Instagram has quietly launched a light version of its Android app

Instagram has quietly launched a light version of its Android app, customised for low-powered phones and patchy network connectivity. It targets the same market that other lite apps from Facebook and Google focus on.

The app is available only on Google Play Store at this moment at just 573-kilobytes in size. It’s 1/55th the size of Instagram’s 32-megabyte original app. As of now, the app lets you filter and post photos to the feed or stories, browse the explore page and watch stories. But features such as sharing videos or Direct messaging friends are still not available.

The launch comes just days after Instagram launched its new long-form video app, IGTV. It also follows Instagram’s mobile website overhaul for the emerging markets.

Notably, the app is not available in India and some other countries right now, but you can still try the app in your country.

Here’s how to install Instagram Lite-

  • Visit the Play Store listing for Instagram Lite on your desktop browser.
  • Now, select and delete the “hl=en&” from the URL in the address bar.
  • Copy the remaining URL and open APKPure website.
  • Hover the cursor over the ’Products’ segment on the top right of the home page and click on ‘APKDownload’.
  • On the next screen paste the copied URL and click on download.
  • You will see the APK download link on the next screen.
  • Copy the APK on your Android device and you are set to install the app.

We tried installing on multiple Android phone, and the app is working on all. The process is as simple as downloading and installing any APK file on your phone, which means users not familiar with the process can also install it.
