Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi recently announced Poco, a new brand that will be headed by Jai Mani, the former Lead Product Manager for Xiaomi. Poco has now revealed that its first flagship device, the Poco F1 will be launched in India on August 22.
Poco made this announcement on its Twitter and Facebook accounts, without revealing any other detail about the device. In global markets, the device is expected to be launched as the Pocophone F1 as the brand has been named as Pocophone for other markets.
The post by Poco said, “More than peak performance, more than speed – the best of smartphone innovation is almost here. Brace yourself for the #MasterOfSpeed. See you on August 22, 2018. #POCOF1”
The Poco brand will focus on flagship phones and is expected to follow OnePlus’s practice of launching one or two flagship devices per year. With its new brand, Xiaomi will take on the likes of OnePlus and Asus in the affordable flagship segment. OnePlus is the current leader in the premium smartphone segment in the country after dethroning Samsung.
After dominating the budget smartphone segment in India, Xiaomi is eyeing the flagship segment, a price range where it could not perform well in India. The company had earlier launched the Xiaomi Mi 5 and the Mi Mix 2, both of which had received lukewarm response.
Poco F1 expected specifications
The Poco F1 has been in the news for some time now and has leaked several times. Recently, an unboxing video of the device had revealed some of its specifications.
The Poco F1 is expected to run on Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 9 skinned on top. While MIUI is popular in India, Xiaomi should take a leaf out of OnePlus’s book and offer a stock Android experience on the F1. It is expected to feature a 5.99-inch full HD+ (2246 x 1080 pixels) 2.5D curved glass display with a notch at the top.
In terms of performance, the Poco F1 is expected to be powered by the octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with Adreno 630 GPU. In terms of memory, the device is expected to be launched in two variants – 6GB RAM + 64GB internal storage and 6GB RAM + 128GB internal storage.
Coming to the camera department, the Poco F1 is expected to feature a dual camera setup at the back consisting a 12-megapixel primary with 1.4μm pixel size and a secondary 5-megapixel camera. On the front, the device is reported to feature a 20-megapixel selfie camera with an LED flash.
The Poco F1 is expected to be powered by a 4,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. In terms of connectivity, the device is expected to feature dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 5, GPS and a USB Type-C port. The unboxing video had revealed that the device will feature a rear-mounted fingering sensor placed below the dual camera setup.
Poco F1 expected pricing
The Poco F1 was earlier listed with a price tag of 1,999 Romanian Leu (Rs. 34,000 approx.) but the device is expected to be priced more competitively in India. Many believe that it could be priced at around Rs 30,000. This would mean that it would undercut the OnePlus 6 in India which starts at Rs 34,999 for the 64GB 6GB RAM model. The Pocco phone will have stiff competition from the likes of the ZenFone 5Z and also the Honor 10 and Huawei Nova 3.
