Chinese smartphone maker Vivo unveiled its first smartphone concept back at MWC 2018 (Mobile World Congress) where it crammed in a fingerprint scanner under its almost bezel-less display. It wasn’t long till the X20 UD concept was turned into a consumer-focused product when the company announced the handset in China in the month of March.
Today, the world’s first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner is making its way to India. The smartphone is being called the Vivo X21 and it has now been officially announced for the Indian market with a price tag of Rs 35,990. The one-of-a-kind smartphone will be available from Flipkart and the first sale begins from today (29 May).
The handset looks strikingly similar to the Vivo V9 and is exactly the same phone as the X21 UD which was released in China. At the front there is a 6.28-inch Super AMOLED display with a FHD+ resolution (2280x1080p) covering the entire front and complemented with a notch. It has an aluminum frame and a glass finish at the back and at its heart there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM. For storage you get 128GB of inbuilt memory with an option to expand it further using a microSD card.
In the camera department, the phone offers a 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel dual-camera combo at the back and a single 12-megapixel camera on the front. The cameras offer face-recognition, portrait mode with bokeh effect, AI assisted beauty mode, 4K UHD video recording, refocusing and more.
The most exciting feature is of course, the fingerprint sensor which is embedded under the lower part of the display. Users can register their fingerprints just like in a regular smartphone and by lightly pressing on the glass, they can unlock their device. In our few hours of testing, we found that the feature worked well. It isn’t super accurate, but it mostly delivers.
Other features include a 3,200mAh battery with Quick Charge support, Android 8.1 Oreo with Funtouch OS 4.0 on top, 4G LTE connectivity, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB OTG. Sadly you get a microUSB port and not a USB Type-C.
If you are interested in the smartphone, Flipkart has announced a few offers exclusively for the Vivo X21. Customers get extra Rs 3,000 off over the regular exchange value of your old smartphone, no-cost EMI of upto 12 months applicable on all credit cards, and 5% extra cashback on SBI credit cards.
