Vivo today took the covers off its latest smartphone and it is an important one for the company. The V11 Pro will sit smack in the middle of the aggressive price band in a market that is supremely value conscious.
Vivo knows and that’s exactly why the V11 Pro has been manufactured at Vivo’s Greater Noida facility. That should keep the final pricing in check and boost the ‘Make in India’ program.
On paper, the smartphone has a lot going for it. It sports In-display fingerprint technology, new Halo FullView display, and AI-powered dual pixel sensor camera. Will that be enough for the device to make it in the fierce smartphone arena, India offers?
Vivo first introduced In-screen display technology at CES earlier this year and has offered the tech on their flagship smartphone. If you had always yearned for the exotic tech to make its way down to mid-range smartphones, you’re in luck as the V11 Pro is the first in the V series to incorporate the elusive tech.
Apart from this, the V11 Pro supports facial recognition too and to increase the accuracy of this system Vivo uses infrared light, to scan 1,024 facial feature points that let you unlock the V11 Pro effortlessly even in the dark.
Design and Display
It is a neatly designed smartphone. The Vivo V11 Pro feels nice in the hand, in spite of its plastic back. The colors on the rear change depending on the light that falls on it. The device feels fairly lightweight at 156 grams. The V11 Pro features a stunning display. It’s a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 6.4-in Super AMOLED Halo FullView real estate that offers a 91.27% screen-to-body ratio. That’s a lot of screen packed into the frame which is near bezel-less at 1.76mm.
It is a beautiful FHD+ display, perfect to watch HD movies on NetFlix, YouTube and more. Color reproduction is stellar thanks to the Super AMOLED nature of the display. Which only means that movie binges will become a thing for you. Gaming too, is a treat on the large screen, with colors coming at you in all richness, at breakneck speeds.
Taking of gaming and entertainment or even daily usage, the V11 Pro impresses with its lag-free nature. It is powered by the Snapdragon 660AIE processor that’s mated with 6GB of RAM. I tried to keep about a dozen apps open as I played PUBG and Asphalt 9 and the phone never crashed or felt sluggish. The 3400mAh battery lasts all day, even with long sessions of gaming and movie indulgence.
There’s 64GB of storage on the inside and you can expand that via the microSD slot. The good bit here is that Vivo has provided a separate slot to plonk in a card along with two SIM card slots.
On the OS front, you get the latest Funtouch OS 4.5 layered over Android 8.1. The overall look is a tad bit bright for me, but there are many themes to explore.
Vivo had quite a bit of success with the launch of the V9 and the brand plans to build on that with the V11 Pro. The brand has always pushed its camera prowess and it gets amped with this device, thanks to the inclusion of AI and a dual-camera (12MP + 5MP) setup on the rear.
Pictures taken from the rear camera exhibit good color capture and the images pop as you shoot in indoor or outdoors. The large f/1.8 aperture and 1.28μm pixel tech that’s built-in help to give you the crispest shots. Skin tones are naturally reproduced and thankfully images do not appear oversaturated.
The 12MP camera on the rear sports dual pixel sensors with 24 million photosensitive units that improve overall light sensitivity and offer superfast autofocus (0.03 seconds). This actually works in the real world and I was able to shift from a close up to a landscape shot effortlessly as the camera focussed in a jiffy. The phone also handles exposure fairly well as you can see in the shot below.
While Vivo promises to offer detail-rich shots in low-light using AI Backlight HDR and AI Low Light Mode, indoor shots taken could have done better. Pictures shot outdoors, in low-light, too could improve on image quality. For tinkerers, you can tweak the shot as you choose to via the Professional mode.
There’s a 25MP camera on the front for selfies with a ton of beauty modes to exploit. While I do prefer turning all the modes off and taking pictures I do know a dozen friends and colleagues who appreciate the inclusion of these modes. The V11 Pro also lets you take decent Portrait shots with blurred backgrounds. You can access this mode by heading to the AI Face Beauty mode while you are in the front cam mode.
While here, you can choose from a total of 6 light situations for that perfect selfie. One of the effects here is the Monochrome background, which quite neatly keeps the subject in color and turns the background into black and white.
In-display fingerprint scanner wants the feels
Once you register your finger and try to unlock the screen, there will be times where it will work flawlessly and quickly. It is absolute fun to use. However, there will be instances when the scanner will refuse to detect your input or gently tell you to press harder. As a rule of thumb, press firmly on the scanner area for this to work effortlessly.
Price on point
The smartphone will be offered in two colors – Dazzling Gold and Starry Night, for ₹25,990 (MOP). If you ask me, that’s not a bad price tag at all for a smartphone that offers so much. Yes it does miss out on the USB-C charging port but it makes up for it by offering a boat load of other features.
You can pre-order the Vivo V11 Pro across all offline channels and on the Vivo e-Store, Amazon, Flipkart, PayTM Mall and Snapdeal from today. Vivo is probably going all out to woo potential consumers with offers that come in the form of flat ₹2,000 cashback on HDFC Bank Credit and Debit cards, ₹2,000 cashback if purchased from PayTM Mall, additional up to ₹2,000 off on exchange of your older smartphone. That’s not all, you can even take advantage of the one-time screen replacement offer in case of screen damage during the first 6 months. All of this makes the new Vivo V11 Pro a great buy if you are looking for a feature-rich smartphone in the mid-range. It looks good inspite of a plastic rear, offers speedy performance, expandable storage, good camera setup, a 3400mAh dual-engine, fast charging battery that lasts all day long and a killer price tag.
