Google’s Bolo App for Kids, Aims to Be a Teacher

The internet is amazing. It lets you see places without visiting them. It can teach you about stuff you’ve always wanted to learn. It allows us to be connected with our people. It is a gateway for anything we need. But that is a very privileged way of looking at things. For many, the internet is the only way to be able to match the education rights that we take for granted. To help bridge that gap, meet Google Bolo.

Bolo is designed as a reading-tutor app that helps primary grade students to improve their reading.

We have been piloting Bolo in 200 villages, and the early results are very encouraging. We are now actively working with a number of nonprofit partners to take it to more people across the country who could benefit from it. The primary function of Google Bolo is to help primary-school kids learn to read and speak in Hindi and English. The reading tutor app had been tested in over 200 villages in India, and the early results were very positive. The next step is to make it reach more people, with the help of Non-Profit Organisations. – Google

The app will be compatible with every phone, running Android KitKat or above. The app weighs in at a mere 44MB and does not require an active internet connection to run. Moreover, a login is also not necessary, making the app practically plug-and-play. There are also in-app rewards and mini-games to keep the users motivated. There is also a reading buddy called Diya to keep users engrossed.

India has the cheapest internet rates in the world, but still has millions of people who have no access to the internet. So, many kids are deprived of the education they deserve because of their financial background or geographic location. An ASER 2018 survey stated that almost half of all rural students from grade 5 could not confident read a grade 2-level textbook.

Google wishes to help improve that with Bolo, by acting as a teacher for the masses who don’t have access to one. It could also be useful for adults who may not feel comfortable going to a school at this age, but still want to learn English.

Google Bolo can already be downloaded from the Playstore, and is expected to gain additional features in the future. It’s always great to see massive brands work for the welfare of people, and goes to show how important and diverse of a market India is.
